Character Claim

This page will have the full list of claimed characters. This page may also be used to drop a character or to canon update a character.

There is currently no limit on how many characters you may apply for, but the character must be from a canon source material -- anime, movies, TV, books, etc -- and they may be from post-death if they die in canon. Real people of any kind will not be accepted. AU or original characters may be accepted with mod permission.

To claim a character, leave a comment with the following formatting, replacing each field with the appropriate information and without adding HTML:

Please make sure your character's journals can be PM'd, and preferably also have a contact/HMD post.

FAQ

How did my character get here? Who's behind all this?
Let's not worry about unimportant little details like that.

Okay. How do the settings and setting changes work?
Every time the setting changes, the OOC community will be updated with a post from the mods using the modpost: setting tag. These posts will explain what the setting will be like, what characters may encounter there, what their task will be, and how long they will remain in that setting. Usually this will be between 4-12 IC days, e.g. between 1-3 RL months, to keep players from feeling like they can't get settled. Any questions can be asked and will be answered on the post itself. You can also plot there!

What happens when the settings change?
Nothing your character will be able to observe. It will happen during the night on the last day of the task; they will wake up in the new setting, bright and early in the morning, with the communicator reflecting their new task. If they attempt to stay awake until the task changes, they will simply fall asleep while doing so, and wake up with everyone else, fully rested.

How do the tasks work?
The task will be some form of action for characters to take. OOCly, you often get to decide whether or not your character does this. Examples might be, Take care of the kittens for a setting where every character wakes up with a kitten, or, Find the exit of the maze for a setting where the characters are inside a labyrinth. Some tasks may be fully passed if only one person accomplishes them (as in the maze) and some may require a majority of participants to pass (as in the kittens). Tasks are not something you will need to spend every moment doing, ICly or OOCly. No one expects your every post or conversation to be "AGGRESSIVELY CARING FOR KITTEN" or "FREAKING OUT SEARCHING FOR THE END OF THE MAZE".

What happens if a task is failed?
The mods will determine at the end of a setting if the task has been passed or failed, based on player input and character actions. If a task is failed -- either because the participants chose to ignore the task, or because they could not / did not meet its expectations -- then the consequence is that the next setting becomes survival horror. This will usually entail monsters, a scarcity of safe shelter, and possibly difficulty in procuring food or water. The task for survival horror settings will simply be, Survive. These punishment settings will be short, probably only 4 IC days in length, and then the next setting will be given regardless of what happened during that time.

What about my character's power? He can fly / she can travel between dimensions / whatever!
During certain settings, such as survival horror settings, powers may also be neutralized; if so, it will say so on the setting post. In general powers are only limited at player discretion, but no power can be used to affect the game premise. How this applies will vary depending on the power: for example, if your character can fly, he can only travel a certain distance before he passes out and wakes up where he started; if your character can travel between dimensions, she may find herself back where she started instead of where she meant to be. If your power can destroy whole planets, you will pass out and wake up where you started.

What possessions does my character have?
Whatever they had on them at the time they were taken from, and then following their initial arrival, whatever they had on them right before the setting changed (while they were asleep). Unless you are literally holding onto an object, don't expect to be able to keep it from setting to setting at this point in time.

What about the communicator? How does that work?
The communicator will always manage to work its way back to your character, no matter what you do to it -- throw it away, break it, lose it. Within an hour it will just casually reappear at your elbow. The communicator has the standard features: video chat, voice chat, and text chat. By default, all communication is public, but you can also choose to make private calls/texts to anyone whose name you know.

Is hacking the communicators an option?
Yes, if and only if your character is 1) a supergenius and therefore can be expected to learn to hack based solely on analyzing the workings of the communicator, or 2) a hacker in canon. These characters can also create encrypted channels that other characters cannot hack; unless labeled an encrypted private, the channel is assumed to be default, and can be hacked by anyone with that ability.

Can I threadjack on other people's threads?
Threadjacking is totally okay in this game, as long as the content isn't filtered from your character! Some common etiquette is to keep it short, keep it on topic, and/or make sure your character also tags the original poster if you aren't threadjacking them. That way you're not ignoring them, talking about things they don't care about! If you're afraid you might be drifting into other topics or going on too long, don't be afraid to have your character go, "Hey, I'm going to call you later, okay? I want to talk to you about something."

Can my character be canon updated?
Yes, they can. However, they cannot be updated until the current task is over and the new one begins. When the setting changes, they will be able to wake up in the new setting with the memories and emotional mindset they were in during their new canon. To canon update, comment to the Taken Page with the requested information. You will receive a comment telling you when your canon update will go into effect.

What happens if my character dies or is killed or suffers a long-term injury?
Everything resets when the setting changes. Meaning that your character will remain dead/injured for the rest of that setting, but then when the new setting begins, they will wake up in their usual state of health. Characters will fully remember the event, and thus may suffer some traumatic mental effects, but they will suffer no long-term physical damage.

Can I app a character who requires special accommodations?
Yes. Comment to this post with the details to get specific information on what sort of accommodations your character may (or may not!) receive.

Your game is so amazing and I have so many ideas for settings I want the characters to go through! Can I, oh please can I?!
Setting suggestions can be submitted here.

What if I just want to make suggestions for the game as a whole?
Oh. Then go to the Mod Contact page.

Rules

  1. The Golden Rule: Treat other people the way you want to be treated. Don't do anything that would make you upset if another player did to you. Treat each other well and address problems directly and maturely.

  2. Remain in-character. The game changes wildly, but we don't want our characters to change with it! Please make sure you are staying true to your character, and respect any concrit you receive.

  3. All IC action will take place on [community profile] randomizing, regardless of whether the post is communicator-based, or in-person action. OOC posts and interactions will go on [community profile] randomly_ooc; you can post there about literally anything.

  4. Please clearly indicate the content of your post in the subject line, e.g. "video" or "log". Posts with action and description are expected to mark it with [square-brackets].

  5. This game will progress at a rate of one week in real life to every one day in-game. Assume that anything posted on Friday or over the weekend is at night unless the post indicates it is backdated.

  6. Do not god-mode. God-mode refers to any method of taking choice away from another character, e.g. announcing that your character has punched another character without giving the player the opportunity to dodge, or using OOC knowledge to get what you want ICly.

  7. Recommended activity standards, per character, are: two threads with 7 comments from you, or one post by you and one thread with 7 comments from you. At the present time, this will not be measured unless concerns are raised. Activity checks will be once a month, and players will comment if they're still playing.

  8. This game was conceived of as a laid-back, low-pressure fun activity. As a result, any rules and standards may later be amended if the game grows into something bigger than that. The community will be notified if this is the case, and consulted about any major changes that affect them.

  9. Ask questions, report problems, or leave comments for the mods here.
